Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
